Jane Boyland is an Associate Professor who also serves as the department chair of The International Hotel School. Her passion is internationalization, whether it be for personal enrichment, becoming a better-informed global citizen or increasing her working knowledge of the competitive international environment of the hospitality industry. She has integrated this passion throughout her work at Johnson & Wales in all aspects of her teaching and research.

As a scholar, Boyland鈥檚 interests include Gastro-Tourism and Hotel Development, and as a teacher she has focused on developing courses focusing on the international hospitality industry.

Boyland seeks to assist students in transitions from their roles as learners to actively engaged global citizens and provides them opportunities for doing so through travel experiences, collaborative industry projects and community service projects with international partner schools, social activities with students from other cultures, and scholarship.

Q&A with Jane

At JWU, education is not confined to the four walls of the classroom. You鈥檙e not going to spend four years with your nose buried in a book, learning theories you may never get a chance to apply 鈥 you鈥檙e going to get out there and apply them, be it through internships, group projects, leadership opportunities, competitions and more.

What Is Your Favorite Teaching Moment?

Every moment in HOSP 3085. This course focuses on three important aspects of students鈥 careers: preparing for an international assignment, managing culturally diverse employees and providing service for international guests. As part of this class, we go on an embedded study abroad trip to explore unique aspects of the industry and experience another culture. So far we have been to Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Ireland, Portugal, Greece and Mexico. I can't wait to see where we go next!

What Advice Do You Have For Incoming Freshmen?

Meet as many people as possible, join a club, attend events, pursue your interests. The friends you make in college will always be an important part of your life, and it is the start of your professional network.鈥
